The Australian Cup is a weight-for-age contest that has a race distance of 2000 metres. The race is held every March at the Flemington Races during Super Saturday. On this day, seven Group 1 races are held including the Australian Guineas and the Newmarket Handicap. The Australian Cup has a prize purse of $1 million.

The Australian Cup originated in 1861 and the race distance has been adjusted many times. The original length of the race is 18 furlongs or 3600 metres and it stayed that way until 1942. In 1943, the distance was adjusted to 17 furlongs, 110 yards or 3500 metres and in 1963, the distance was shortened to 3200 metres.

A year after, the race distance of the Australian Cup was once again reduced to ten furlongs or about 2000 metres. Due to the conversion of Australia to the metric system, the race distance of the Australian Cup was fixed to its current length of exactly 2000 metres in 1973. In 2007, the race was held at the Caulfield Racecourse.

Due to its distance, this race often attracts race horses that excel in middle-distance races. The home turf of the Australian Cup, the Flemington Racecourse, is known for its 1200-metre straight known as the Straight Six due to its six-furlong length. Flemington has a circumference of 2312 metres and a home straight of 450 metres. All races in Flemington are staged counter-clockwise.

Throughout the history of the Australian Cup, only six horses have won the race more than once. Woodman first achieved the feat in 1863 and 1864 while Welkin Prince copied the achievement almost a century later in 1961 and 1962. Craftsman also did the same in 1964 and 1965 while Ming Dynasty won in 1978 and 1980. Vo Rouge also won back-to-back in 1989 and 1990 while Northerly is the latest thoroughbred to do such feat when it won in 2001 and 2003.

Punters for the Australian Cup can place either standard bets or exotic bets. Standard bets include the win bet, the place bet and the each-way bet. The win bets requires you to pick the race horse that will win the race. For the place bet, you will pick the horses that you think will finish first, second and third and you will win if you get any of the three places right.

For the each-way bet, you can place two bets on one horse. This means that you can have one of two payouts if your chosen horse wins the Australian Cup or if it finished second or third. This bet is ideal especially if there are three equally-talented race horses in a particular race.

Meanwhile, exotic bets involve a number of horses included in one bet. Due to the tougher requirements that you have to satisfy, exotic bets offer more generous payouts than the standard bets. Punters closely monitor Australian Cup betting odds so that they can call successful exotic bets. Under the exotic odds are the trifecta bet, the quinella bet, the exacta bet and the first four bet.

For the trifecta bet, you must pick the three race horses that will cross the 2011 Australian Cup finish line first in exact order. Meanwhile, the quinella bet requires that you pick the first two horses that will finish the race regardless of order. If you want a tougher bet, the exacta bet requires you to pick the top two horses that will finish the race in exact order.

The toughest bet that you can make for the 2011 Australian Cup is the first four bet wherein you must choose the first four race horses that will finish the race in exact order. Winning this bet gives you a payout that is bigger than any other bet.

Punters usually place an accumulator bet which lets a punter place his bet on one horse in many races. For this betting option, the betting odds of the chosen horse are multiplied to gain bigger odds. However, this payout can only be won if the chosen horse will win all of the races that he participated in.

This is the reason why some punters look down the betting odds list and have a thorough look at the horses that are bunched there. To guarantee a victory, they often place equal betting amounts on a horse with short betting odds and a horse with long betting odds but has the potential to pull off an upset.

The 2011 Australian Cup will be held on the 12th of March and at the betting odds list, Zipping has top betting odds of 6.00 while Heart of Dreams and shocking have identical betting odds of 6.50. Moudre, Linton and Precedence have betting odds of 9.00, 11.00 and 13.00 respectively while Anacheeva and Wall Street have the same betting odds at 17.00.

Playing God has 2011 Australian Cup betting odds of 21.00 while Alcopop, Cedarberg, Ginga Dude, Harris Tweed, Rebel Soldier and Scenic Shot all have betting odds of 26.00. Éclair Surprise, Faint Perfume and Trusting have betting odds of 31.00 while Spacecraft and Booming have betting odds of 34.00 and 41.00 respectively.

Lord Pyrus, Purple, Lorne Dancer and Cest La Guerre have the same betting odds with 51.00 while Kutchinsky is given betting odds of 61.00. Mr. Charlie and Scottish Border have identical betting odds at 71.00 while Zevada and Hanks have the same betting odds at 91.00. Mourayan and My Bentley have Australian Cup betting odds of 101.00 while Extra Zero, Ms. Darcey and Laristan also have identical betting odds of 201.00.
