Two-year-old race horses take centre stage at Victoria’s Blue Diamond Stakes. This Group 1 race is contested over 1200 metres and competitors must have set weights in order to join. Colts and geldings must weight 55.5 kilograms during the race while fillies must carry a weight of 53 kilograms. The Caulfield Racecourse is the stage for the Blue Diamond Stakes which happens every February.
The Blue Diamond Stakes is also the richest horse race for two-year-old horses in Victoria for its prize pool reaches $1 million and the race winner gets $600,000. The inaugural Blue Diamond Stakes was held in 1971 and Tolerance was the race’s first-ever winner. However, the race that time was just a Principal race that was held over six furlongs or about 1200 metres. The race distance was fixed to 1200 metres in 1973 because of Australia’s conversion to the metric system.
The Blue Diamond Stakes’ home turf, the Caulfield Racecourse, has a circumference of 2,080 metres and a home straight of 367 metres. The triangular-shaped race turf has long and sweeping corners and an uphill part at the back of the course. The short home straight and sharp corners make it hard for thoroughbreds to win by catching up.
The banking on the turn going to the home straight is four percent while the banking on the other corners is at two percent. Since the Blue Diamond Stakes is a 1200-metre race, it starts from a racing chute and there will only be one turn for the entire race: the turn going into the home straight. With the race’s short distance, faster horses will have an advantage going into the race.
To prepare for the Blue Diamond Stakes, trainers usually enlist their two-year-old race horses in the Blue Diamond Preludes. There are two Blue Diamond Preludes, one for fillies and one for colts and geldings, which are both 1100 metres long. Both races have a prize pool of $125,000 and it will be a good tune-up race coming into the Blue Diamond Stakes itself.
Both preludes started in 1982 with Formal Invitation taking the win for fillies and Rancher for the colts and geldings. Both races have been classified as Listed before they were elevated to Group 3 status in 1998 while both races started using the 1100-metre race distance in 1998. In 2010, Psychologist won the prelude for fillies while Beneteau won the race for colts and geldings.
Betting on the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes can be classified into standard bets and exotic bets. Standard bets include the win bet, the place bet and the each-way bet. In the win bet, you simply have to pick the race horse that will win the race. For the place bet, you will pick the horses that you think will finish first, second and third and you will win if you get any of the three places right.
For the each-way bet, you can place two bets on one horse. This means that you can have one of two payouts if your chosen horse wins the Blue Diamond Stakes or if it finished second or third. Meanwhile, exotic bets are harder to satisfy given the higher volume of horses needed to complete the bet. Under the exotic odds are the trifecta, the quinella, the exacta and the first four bet.
For the trifecta bet, you must pick the three race horses that will cross the finish line first in exact order. Meanwhile, the quinella bet requires that you pick the first two horses that will finish the race regardless of order.
If you want a tougher bet, the exacta bet requires you to pick the top two horses that will finish the race in exact order. The toughest bet to call is the first four bet wherein you must choose the first four race horses that will finish the race in exact order. Winning this bet gives you a payout that is bigger than any other bet.
For the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes, Sepoy has the highest win betting odds at 5.00 and place betting odds of 2.00. Right behind is One Last Dance with win betting odds of 6.50 and place betting odds of 2.37. At third is Anevay with betting odds of 9.00 and place betting odds of 3.00.
