Four-year-old Rothesay will not compete in the 1600-metre, Group 1 Epsom Handicap due to health concerns. The Fastnet Rock son has an elevated temperature over the weekend due to a virus in the stable of trainer Gerald Ryan.
Now that Rothesay is out of the $500,000 Epsom Handicap, a combination of medicine and rest will make it possible for the race horse to resume racing at the 1600-metre, Group 1 Emirates Stakes at the Flemington racecourse on the 6th of November during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Due to Rothesay’s withdrawal from the Epsom Handicap at the Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, the Peter Snowden-trained Drumbeats is now the top race favourite with a 6.50 SportsBet betting odd.
Though Drumbeats won the Bill Ritchie Handicap, the five-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice was primed in competing at the 1600-metre, Group 1 Toorak Handicap on the 9th of October. However, trainer Peter Snowden has changed his mind and he is seriously considering an Epsom Handicap run for Drumbeats due to Rothesay’s withdrawal.
Drumbeats has also been given a 52-kilogram weight for the Epsom Handicap which makes him the top favourite to win the race. Out of all the Epsom Handicap competitors, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Theseo was given the top weight of 59.5 kilograms.
However, Theseo has also withdrawn from the race and is set to sit out the rest of the spring carnival due to a dismal performance at the George Main Stakes. Other high-weight race horses that might withdraw from the Epsom Handicap are the 59-kilogram Danleigh and the 58.5-kilogram Metal Bender.
Due to Rothesay’s withdrawal, 52-kilogram Neeson has also become a favorite to win the Epsom Handicap with a 7.00 SportsBet betting odd. Meanwhile, the George Main Stakes runner-up and John Thompson-trained Trusting has an 8.00 betting odd.
Meanwhile, Black Piranha is set to compete at the 2010 Epsom Handicap and he has a betting odd of 17.00. The Con Karakatsanis-trained race horse will be steered by Nash Rawiller and finished fifth at the George Main Stakes.
Also, seven-year-old Empires Choice withdrew from the Epsom Handicap though he finished third to More Joyous at the George Main Stakes. Empires Choice trainer Bart Cummings said that his race horse might incur an injury due to the bad condition of the Randwick Racecourse.
