The Gai Waterhouse-trained More Joyous cemented his claim for a Cox Plate victory after the mare won turned on another impressive run to gain victory at the 1600-metre, Group 1 George Main Stakes at the Randwick racecourse. When asked about her race horse’s performance, Waterhouse said that More Joyous is an out-of-this-world superhorse.
Starting with a 1.60 George Main Stakes betting odd, the four-year-old daughter of More Than Ready destroyed the opposition to win by one and three-fourth lengths over Trusting. The Bart Cummings-trained Empire’s Choice finished third three quarter behind More Joyous. Trusting and Empire’s Choice carried George Main Stakes betting odds of 31.00 and 101.00 respectively.
To solidify More Joyous’ slot for the WS Cox Plate, jockey Corey Brown pulled away from the eight-horse field at the middle of the home straight. With her victory, More Joyous became the first mare to win the George Main Stakes since 1986 when Ma Chiquita did the same feat. On the other hand, More Joyous’ stablemate Theseo finished seventh.
More Joyous is currently at a three-race winning streak after winning the Sheraco Stakes and Theo Marks Stakes. So far, the stellar mare has won nine of her 12 career starts and she has won about $1.14 million in prize money. More Joyous’ George Main Stakes victory is Waterhouse’s 99th Group 1 triumph.
Because of this impressive performance, the betting odds of More Joyous for the 2010 WS Cox Plate are now at 5.50. She is primed to be one of the main race horses that can win the $3 million weight-for-age Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on the 23rd of October. If she wins, she will only be the second horse in Australian horse racing history to win the George Main-Cox Plate double after Kingston Town did it in 1981 and 1982.
Though More Joyous will not compete in the Epsom Handicap, she will have her last pre-Cox Plate race at the 1600-metre, Group 1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on the 9th of October. However, defending Cox Plate champion So You Think is still seen by many to win consecutive Cox Plates. SportsBet gave So You Think a 2.40 betting odd for the Cox Plate.
