Some early aspirants for the 2010 Melbourne Cup have drawn out of contention due to injuries or tactical reasons. Thus, the number of hopefuls for the 150th Melbourne Cup has been narrowed down yet again.

British race horse Illustrious blue has his Melbourne Cup hopes dwindling due to change of plans. Having been nominated by trainer William Knight for the 2010 Melbourne Cup, the race horse is more likely to stay in Europe and take a shot at the Prix du Cadran in October instead of making the trip to Australia. In July, Illustrious Blue won the 3200-metre Goodwood Cup before finishing fifth at the Lonsdale Cup.

Due to the change of plans, Knight said that he will give the eight-year-old race horse some rest after the Prix du Cadran. However, SportsBet still has Illustrious Blue with a 41.00 Melbourne Cup betting odd. Meanwhile, the talented Kutchinsky is also out of the Melbourne Cup and the Caulfield Cup due to a virus.

The Tony Noonan-trained race horse won the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes but his last race was the Group 1 Queensland Derby wherein he finished second to 2010 Melbourne Cup favourite Dariana. He was originally nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups but he acquired a virus that has dampened his major spring carnival hopes.

Though he will not risk Kutchinsky’s health for any Group 1 races for now, Noonan said that he can let the four-year-old gelding of Anabaa compete in races of lower classifications if the horse’s health slightly improves.

The Caulfield and Melbourne Cup plans of four-year-old race horse Shamoline Warrior were also put to an end due to a mild tear in his ligament. The Mark Kavanagh-trained race horse has not had the best of luck recently. He was a pre-race favourite during the Victoria Derby but he was scratched out of the race in the morning due to high temperature.

Also, this son of Shamardal finished a disappointing first-up at the Group 2 JJ Liston Stakes after beating just one other runner to the finish line. Because of Shamoline Warrior’s injury, Kavanagh has decided to let the race horse rest to prepare for the autumn racing carnival.

Falling out of Melbourne Cup contention as well is Predatory Pricer. Trainer Mick Price confirmed that his horse suffered a hock infection after finishing second at the JJ Liston Stakes to Shoot Out. This infection will make him forego of the 2010 WS Cox Plate as well.
