The 2010 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill races on Saturday proves to be a duel between the best horses from Victoria and New South Wales. The best three-year-old horses of Melbourne, namely Crystal Lily, Toorak Toff and Panapique will compete against Sydney’s Masquerader and Squamosa, in the richest race of the NSW Autumn Carnival.

Rosehill Race Track
The Golden Rose Stakes has become one of the most important Australian horse races from its humble beginnings in 2003. In 2009, the decision by Racing NSW to give it Group 1 status was backed by the strong duel by Denman and Trusting during the said race.
After an impressive victory at the Vain Stakes, Victorian Toorak Toff is one of the favourites to win the race with a 4.60 betting odds. Behind the fantastic Shoot Out, Toorak Toff recorded the second fastest last 200 metres of the day.
After the Vain Stakes victory, Trainer Rick declaring that Toorak Toff is a very good horse and that there was no stiff challenge for the said horse that day. Hore-Lacy is the trainer of Redoute’s Choice which is one of the best three-year-old race horses in the last 20 years.
Before its debut at the Sandown racecourse, Toorak Toff was mistakenly listed as a gelding in form guides. However, he won with ease that day and the owners were relieved when the post-race inspection of the horse showed intact bits.
So far, Toorak Toff has won four out of seven career races but he did not compete in two stellar autumn races for two year olds: the Group 1 Sires Produce and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.
Meanwhile, Peter Moody will be represented by Panapique, a Testa Rossa filly who surprised horse race fans by dominating the champion two-year-old horse Crystal Lily with a devastating turn of foot at the Quezette Stakes.
New South Wales’ defense of their home racecourse will be lead by the David Payne-trained Masquerader which has an identical 4.60 betting odd with Toorak Toff. His only defeat came during the Run to the Rose when he finished behind Squamosa which is trained by Gai Waterhouse.
Coming into that race, Masquerader is five kilograms lighter than Squamosa. Masquerader has shown that he can adapt to various race conditions but the barrier draw on Thursday would determine how jockey Glyn Shofield would navigate him.
On the other hand, the unbeaten colt Squamosa has been discarding the opposition that is blocking his way to victory and he will be steered by Nash Rawiller during the Golden Rose Stakes. This son of Not a Single Doubt will run straight to try and get the victory.
No matter how great these race horses are, the barrier draw on Thursday is a big factor that will seal their fate for the 2010 Golden Rose Stakes. Being the richest race of the New South Wales autumn racing carnival, the champion will get $650,000 and will boost their chances for the Caulfield Guineas.
