Flemington Races

Set to run at the Flemington races on the 2nd of November, the 2010 Melbourne Cup has attracted 253 stayers in its nomination period. Out of this figure, 44 are international race horses, five better on the 39 international-trained race horses that were nominated in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

The teams of the these gallopers from various parts of the globe paid the nomination fee of $660 to have a shot at the big chunk of the $6 million total prize pool for the 2010 Melbourne Cup. Leading the pack of international race horses is the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer who garnered a runner-up finish to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup.

Other notable internationally-trained nominees are the Goodwood Cup winner Illustrious Blue, Japanese Tenno Sho winner Jaguar Mail, Dermot Weld’s Rite Of Passage which recently won the Gold Cup and Irish mare Profound Beauty that has been one of the punter’s early favourites.

Meanwhile, the Australian contingent won’t be left behind and notable Australian entries for this year’s Melbourne Cup include defending champion Shocking, the John O’ Shea-trained Jessicabeel and Zabrasive, Galileo gelding Linton and the John Wallace-trained Shoot Out.

Trainer Bart Cummings is keen to dominate this year’s Melbourne Cup for he has nominated twelve of his race horses including the VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume, 2009 WS Cox Plate winner So You Think and Queensland Derby winner Dariana.

Late nominations for the 2010 Melbourne Cup will close on Tuesday and late nominees will be charged with a $3,300 late entry fee. Handicaps will be given on the 1st of September while the first declarations will be done on the 7th of September.

Meanwhile, online bookmakers including SportsBet will have their ante-post betting markets for the 2010 Melbourne Cup open by Thursday. So far, Dariana and Shocking are the top pre-race favourites with identical 13.00 betting odds while Faint Perfume has a 15.00 betting odd. Jessicabeel and Meiner Kitz both have a 17.00 betting odd.

Having a betting odd of 31.00 are Jaguar Mail, Monaco Consul, Rainbow Peak, Vigor, Rundle, Precedence, Rite of Passage and Chartreux.
