Foreign Competitors Eye Melbourne Cup

Written By Chris On Thursday, August 5th, 2010

The 150th staging of the Melbourne Cup will draw more international attention due to the presence of the 45 overseas race horses which are included in the 253 nominees for the said race. Due to the Melbourne Cup’s prize money of $6 million, this year’s edition has attracted a large number of foreign-bred horses that are ready to compete against the top Australian stayers.

A lot of overseas horses are gunning for a slot in the richest handicap race in the world that will be staged on the 2nd of November at the Flemington racecourse. This is the reason why the betting odds of Sportsbest on having an international 2010 Melbourne Cup winner have dramatically shortened.

The foreign delegation of the Melbourne Cup came from different parts of the globe including Hong Kong, Europe and Japan. Also, legendary Irish trainer Dermot Weld is hoping that his four horses will qualify.

Having won the Melbourne Cup with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002, Weld aims to win his third Melbourne Cup with Majestic Concorde, Natural High, early favourite Profound Beauty and Group 1, 4000-metre Ascot Gold Cup winner Rite Of Passage.

Meanwhile, horse racing powerhouse Godolphin has nine horses for nomination. Despite being a top-notch racing group, they have not won the Melbourne Cup. However, they have three runner-up finishes with Central Park in 1999, Give The Slip in 2001 and Crime Scene in 2009.

Saeed bin Suroor, head trainer of Godolphin, will do his best to secure a Melbourne Cup victory with English St. Leger winner Mastery, Arc De Triomphe place finisher Cavalryman and Group 1 winning race horse Campanologist.

Also, English trainer Luca Cumani is looking for his first Melbourne Cup victory by fielding five top entries. Aside from Purple Moon and Bauer who had place finishes at the Melbourne Cup in 2007 and 2008 respectively, Cumani also nominated Manighar, Becqu Adoree and the highly touted Drunken Sailor.

After four years when the Japanese-trained duo of Delta Blues and Pop Rock recorded a one-two finish, the 2010 Melbourne Cup will once again have at least one representative from Japan thanks to the approval of the Japanese quarantine facilities by Australian officials before the start of the 2010 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Five Japanese horses are trying to enter the main race and the favourite among them is the Group 1, 3200-metre Tenno Sho winner Jaguar Mail that is owned by Katsumi Yoshida who once owned Pop Rock and Delta Blues as well. Jaguar Mail’s Tenno Sho runner-up, Meiner Kitz, has also been registered for the 2010 Melbourne Cup.

Other contenders from outside Australia are this year’s Goodwood Cup winner Illustrious Blue, French stayers Americain and Laristan and the Jeremy Noseda-trained Sans Frontieres.
