Larry Cassidy will try to steer Beaded to victory at the Winter Stakes at the Eagle Farm racecourse on Saturday. The jockey from Brisbane was chosen to take the reins after Kerrin McEvoy was deemed unfit for the upcoming race after taking a nasty fall at the Takeover Target Stakes at the Gosford racecourse.
Even though McEvoy is out of harm’s way, he is still feeling some back pains and his status will be known after a series of medical tests. However, it is very unlikely that he can take the saddle on Beaded, Pinwheel and Hierarchy during the races on Saturday. Peter Snowden originally chose McEvoy to ride all of his three horses during the said race day.
While Snowden has not yet chosen a jockey for Pinwheel, his other horse Hierarchy will be taken over by top jockey Nash Rawiller. Meanwhile, Beaded is coming off a superb run at the Stradbroke Handicap by racing from the wide barrier to finish a close fourth. When asked about Beaded’s strength, Snowden easily pointed out her toughness for she throws in everything that she has until the race has ended.
Being one of the more popular horse races in Australia during the winter since its inception in 1989, the Winter Stakes is the last Group 1 race in the Australian horse racing calendar. This 1400-metre race is staged every June at the Eagle Farm during the final day of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
This race is open to fillies and mares and is contested under weight-for-age rules. It had a prize purse of $500,000 in 2009 which easily makes it one of the most lucrative races conducted by the Brisbane Turf Club. The usual competitors for the Winter Stakes are the top female horses in Queensland as well as fillies and mares from other states.
Aside from the Winter Stakes, the said race day also features the Group 3, $200,000 Tattersall’s Cup and the $175,000 WJ Healy Stakes. Those who are gunning for the Winter Stakes usually join any of the ideal lead-up races such as the Group 3, 1350-metre Lady of the Turf Stakes at the Doomben racecourse in May and the Group 2, 1400-metre Dane Ripper Quality.
The last race horse to get a Dane Riper Quality-Winter Stakes double was Tripping in 1996. Other great horses that have added the Winter Stakes to their collection of victories are Miss Potential in 2004, Dane Ripper in 1997 and Mamzelle Pedrille in 1995. On the other hand, Bonanova is the only race horse to win back-to-back Winter Stakes when she did the feat in 1999 and 2000.
In 2009, Russeting won over Prima Nova and Subtle Cove despite having a 19.00 betting odd by bookmakers. Prima Nova had a 31.00 betting odd and Subtle Cove had a 51.00 betting odd. Meanwhile, pre-race favourites Forensics with a 2.50 horse racing betting odd and Absolut Glam with a 4.20 betting odd completed the race in sixth and ninth positions respectively.
