Dariana, Russeting Cleared For Races

Written By admin On Friday, June 11th, 2010

Bart Cumming’s quest for his 260th Group 1 victory seems to be a strong cause for Dariana was cleared for the Queensland Derby while Russeting is also competing at the Stradbroke Handicap in Eagle Farm.

With only four Group One races left, Russeting became the 18th qualifier for the 1400-metre Stradbroke Handicap after New Zealand sprinter Fritzy Boy pulled out of the race after a sore injury at the Group 2 QTC Cup. Sprinters Border Rebel and The Jackal will also not compete in this year’s Stradbroke Handicap.

Meanwhile, Cumming’s horse Latin News will be the first emergency for the Stradbroke Handicap. Latin News got this distinction after finishing third to Girl Hussler at the 1200-metre Listed Daybreak Lover at the Eagle Farm racecourse. In the latest TAB Sportsbet release, Latin News has a 10.00 betting odd while Whobegotyou proves to be the race’s early favourite with a 2.50 betting odd.

Following the Breakfast with the Stars trackwork session at Eagle Farm, Dariana qualified through a barrier trial test that was conducted by the officials of Queensland Racing. Meanwhile, Cumming has also lined up Landlord for the Queensland Derby and he is hoping that Brightnight will be able to compete at his third horse in this 2400-metre race.

Out of the three Cummings horses, Landlord has the highest betting odd with 7.00 while Dariana and Brightnight has TAB Sportsbet betting odds of 9.00 and 17.00 respectively. Out of the Queensland Derby competitors, Kutchinsky is the early favourite with a 2.80 betting odd while The Hombre and Fieldmaster are the second and third favourites with betting odds of 5.00 and 6.00 respectively, for a complete list of odds, click here to visit IASBet.com.au.

During the Queensland Oaks, Dariana caused a stir after refusing to jump with the field after her head was stuck into an adjoining stall. However, this Redoute’s Choice daughter showed no tantrums in the 800-metre jumpout days after for she eased out of it after travelling only 200 metres.

Usually, steward would require horses to have two barrier tests under the same conditions. However, chief steward Wade Birch believes that Dariana is no danger to other Queensland Derby competitors. Birch added that Dariana posed a risk to herself only in the Queensland Oaks that is why she needed to jump only once. If successful, Dariana will be the ninth filly to win the Queensland Derby since 1973.

The previous winners were Riva San (2008), Camarena (1999), Royal Magic (1992), Bravery (1988), Princess Gracious (1987), Tristina (1985), Florissa (1977) and Analie (1973). Also, Queensland Oaks winner Miss Keepsake and runner-up Marheta will also compete in the Queensland Derby. If Miss Keepsake wins, she will be the fifth horse to garner an Oaks-Derby double since 1973.

Cummings last victory in the Queensland Derby was in 2007 with Empire’s Choice. Meanwhile, Russeting which had a 12th place finish to Hot Danish at the Doomben 10,000 has a 26.00 betting odd.
