Kidnapped takes the 2010 South Australian Derby
In its first start in a race of over 2000 metres, Peter Snowden’s Kidnapped pulled a close victory in the $300,000, Group 1 South Australian Derby at the Allan Scott Park in Morphettville. Before this 2500-metre race began, Kidnapped was a $4.60 favourite to win the derby.
Second favourite Red Colossus which carried a $4.80 betting odd ran out of steam at the final straight to lose by a head while Sea Galleon which had a $14 betting odd came in third by being a half-length away. During its last start prior to this, Kidnapped grabbed third place at the 2014-metre Listed Chairman’s Stakes while Red Colossus finished first.
After one of four emergencies, Sherpa Tenzing was scratched from the competing horses and was replaced by Tuscan Fire. At the starting gate, Kidnapped was at the extreme outside gate of the sixteen-horse race.
The three-year-old Viscount gelding which was steered to victory by local jockey Kerrin McEvoy overcame the wide barrier in the 16 draw. McEvoy showed patience and perfect timing by letting Kidnapped run in the second to the last position before going for the kill when the rest of the horses bunched.
However, Sea Galleon still held the lead at the early stage of the straight but Kidnapped and Red Colossus gave all that they got for the duel for the top prize. In the end, Kidnapped outclassed Red Colossus to bag its fifth career win out of 14 starts. Because of its impressive showing at the South Australian Derby, Kidnapped’s career prize money ballooned to $683,277.
However, Kidnapped will rest in the stables after its impressive victory instead of heading to Brisbane for the winter carnival races. Another race that filled Morphettville’s Super Sunday is the $300,000, 1200-metre Group 1 Goodwood wherein Velocitea pulled an upset over local thoroughbred Catapulted.
Also included in the Morphettville Super Sunday race card is the $200,000, 1600-metre Group 3 RA Lee Stakes and the $100,000, 1800-metre Group 3 Auraria Stakes which was won by Fairy Oak.
