The AJC Australian Oaks is a Group 1 race that is held in April a week after the AJC Australian Derby. This race is for three-year-old fillies and is staged at the Randwick race course in Sydney, New South Wales. Since its criteria for selecting participants is tough, it ensures an exciting race every year. This helped the event to be one of the most awaited horse races in the Australian horse racing calendar.
The Australian Oaks was first staged in 1855 when Urualla won the inaugural event in what was then known as the Adrian Knox States. Since 1955, the race was known as the Australian Oaks. From 1922 to 1945, the race was contested on a mile-long track. This distance was increased by 400 metres from 1946 to 1955 to make it a 2000-metre race.
Since 1956, the race was run in its current distance of 2400 metres. This race is also being held during what is known as the Doncaster Handicap Day which features The Galaxy sprint race and the Doncaster Handicap.
The Australian Oaks is also a blue ribbon event for young females and it can help increase the value of its winners if they become broodmares when their careers have ended. The three-year-old fillies that compete on the Australian Oaks can qualify via the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes and the Group 2 Adrian Knox States. Both of these races have a distance of 2000 metres.
Some of the most notable fillies who have won this race are Research (1989), Triscay (1991) and Grand Archway (1999), Rena’s Lady (2007) and Heavenly Glow (2008). The 2009 edition of the Australian Oaks had a $350,000 prize pool and was won by Daffodil and jockey Hugh Bowman. Coming in at second is Think Money and Miss Darcey finished at third.
For the 2010 Australian Oaks, Faint Perfume which is trained by the legendary Bart Cummings and Valdemoro which hails from the Tony Vasil stable are the early favourites to win the race. Both of these horses proved to be unstoppable during their last two races in Sydney.
The duo finished one-two in the $1 million, 2500-metre Crown Oaks at the Flemington Racecourse last November 2009. Last March, the duo once again had the same finish at the $400,000, 2000-metre Storm Queen Stakes at the Rosehill Gardens.
These results prompted bookmakers to place Faint Perfume as the early favourite for the 2010 Australian Oaks with a 2.70 betting odd. Next to it is Valdemoro with a 4.20 betting odd and Speedy Natalie which won the 2010 Adrian Knox Stakes and is trained by Peter Moody has a 7.50 betting odd.
Not to be disregarded is Once Were Wild with a 15.00 betting odd. This horse is trained by Gai Waterhouse and is jockeyed by multi-titled Nash Rawiller. Also, Run for Naara can give the top competitors a run for their money as it enters the race with a 17.00 betting odd. And finally, New Zealand competitor November Rain proves to be the dark horse for the race with a 26.00 betting odd.
