The Doncaster Handicap is one of the two prestigious mile handicap races that are staged in the Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. It was first staged in 1866 and was won by the horse Dundee after winning the Epsom Handicap in 1865.
In 1871, the only dead heat in the race’s history took place as Lottery and Sir William shared the top prize. Because of this, it became one of the highly-anticipated mile races in Australia. This race has been held in Randwick every year except in 1942 when the army took over the track. Because of this, the race was held at the Rosehill Racecourse during that year.
Now, the Doncaster Handicap is one of the most famous mile races in the Australian horse racing calendar. This Group One thoroughbred horse race is held over 1600 metres and has a prize pool of $2,500,000.
It is held every year on Easter Monday and it is the April counterpart of the $600,000 Epsom Handicap which is staged in October. This race is usually run with the 2400-metre A J C Australian Oaks for fillies and the 1100-metre The Galaxy for speedsters.
Several famous horses have claimed victory at Doncaster and most of which have won the Epsom as well. In 1990 and 1991, Super Impose made Australian horse racing history when it became the only horse to claim both races on two separate occasions.
In recent years, three horses have won the cup twice. After Super Impose’s run in 1990 and 1991, Pharaoh won the Doncaster Handicap in 1994 and 1995 while Sunline won the 1999 and 2002 editions of the race. In 2006, jockey G. Boss and 51-kilogram thoroughbred Racing to Win won the Doncaster in 1:34.11. Johan’s Toy and Bentley Biscuit finished second and third respectively.
Other notable champions of the Doncaster Handicap are Soho Square (1992), Skating (1993), Sprint By (1996), Secret Savings (1997), Catalan Opening (1998), Over (2000), Assertive Lad (2001), Grand Armee (2003), Private Steer (2004) and Patezza (2005)
For the 2010 Doncaster Handicap Mile, the prize pool will be AUD$1,500,000 and the trophies will be worth $11860. The top finisher will win $900,000 in cash and a trophy worth $9,860. The second placer will take home $285,000 while the third finisher gets $150,000.
So far, 71 thoroughbreds that are at least three years old have been nominated to fill the 20 spots of the 2010 Doncaster Handicap. Leading the way is the race’s defending champion, Vision and Power, with trainer Joseph Pride. This horse carries a 34.00 win betting odd and a 9.25 place betting odd coming in to the race.
