There are seven other fantastic races on Derby Day each worthy of it’s own preview but the Melbourne Cup is now just days away. In sticking with the “Bartmania” theme and likening it too when the Beatles first hit our shores in 1964 with “Beatlemania” then this year’s cup does have it’s own version of the “Fab Four”. Past winners Viewed and Efficient are equine versions of John and Paul with Alcopop right in the money as George with Bart’s other fancy Roman Emperor next in betting as the not so fancied “Ringo”.
The key to the Melbourne Cup is to be able to run the two miles and these four dominate the betting because they are the horses that are either proven at the distance or look certain to do so. Master O’reilly looks a better chance this year while Daffodil heads the Kiwi charge. Next in betting are the international horses Mourilyan and Changingoftheguard while Vigor is still waiting for a spot in the field. If he does get a start, expect his price to shorten as Caulfield cup place getters have a wonderful record in “the race that stops a nation”.
