Shamoline Warrior has won his last two in grand style and is the deserved favourite with trainer Mark Kavanagh hoping to snare the race after Whobegotyou was runner up last year. Danny O’Brien’s Rockferry has also been impressive in two runs at Geelong and there is no doubt he will appreciate the big wide straight at Flemington. Monaco Consul is a lightly raced Kiwi who was brilliant in winning the Champion Stakes and while is proven in slow ground he is yet to show that turn of foot on a good surface. Viking Legend was third in the AAMI Vase and it should be noted that the two horses who beat him last week aren’t running on the weekend. Southern Skye’s win in the Geelong classic suggests he will get the distance while Onemorenomore meets Shamoline Warrior two kilos better than when defeated in the Norman Robinson. Gathering , Extra Zero and the other Kiwi, Our Heir apparent, all have a chance and while the betting suggests that there are nine in the running and two absolute no-hopers, don’t underestimate the bottomweight Commonage Place. He is at huge odds but just might sneak into a place.
