An excerpt from the Sportsbet Racing News letter:
The Melbourne Cup may well be the “race the stops the nation” but often the Caulfield Cup is much more intriguing and this year is no exception. Just when you thought it was “safe to go back in the water” after the scratching of the two favourites, Speed Gifted and Maldivian, the barrier draw on Wednesday changed the complexion of the race again. A month ago Vigor was unbeatable with his low weight, but a couple of ordinary runs and now the absolute outside barrier sees him out to a double figure quote. Predatory Pricer’s preparation has been perfect but he too has also drawn out wide, something that history tells us is perilously problematic in the Caulfield Cup.
The real story is the continuing support for the two overseas horses, Kirklees and Cima De Triomphe. The Godolphin camp stole the race last year with All The Good at long odds. This year, Kirklees is said to be a better horse, has won it’s last three and has drawn the perfect barrier. No surprises then that the six year old is now second favourite, firming from $26.00 to $8.50.The new favourite is the Luca Cumani trained Cima De Triomphe. The last three years has shown that out of all the overseas trainers that bring horse to Australia, Cumani knows what is required to win under our conditions. Another good barrier draw and Damien Oliver’s unabashed devotion to ride for the stable now sees him the $8.00 favourite. The other horse that has come under notice is the Bart Cummings trained Allez Wonder. An outstanding win in the Toorak handicap and the ideal barrier in six, has seen the lightly weighted mare shorten from $81.00 to $13.00 in four days of betting. The kiwi horse Daffodil has had no “press” and despite being “under the radar” deserves attention and both Master O’Reilly and Viewed are proven performers on the big stage and should not be taken lightly.
