Freedman Wins Seventh Title
Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman won his seventh Victorian Metropolitan Trainers’ Premiership with victory in the last race of the season at Sandown yesterday.
Freedman pipped South Australian trainer David Hayes, who was chasing his ninth title by one after 3-year-old filly Charzoo scored in the last for apprentice Nathan Rose.
The Jockey’s title also came down to the wire with Damien Oliver and Craig Williams sharing the award after being tied on 71 winners each.
Williams looked to have the title in his grasp after scoring aboard Dane The Rave, which is trained by his father Allan.
Oliver rode a double for Ballarat trainer Darren Weir to draw level and while both jockeys had rides in the final two races aboard well fancied runners, neither could snare a winner to win the title outright.
It was the fourth consecutive Jockeys’ Premiership for Williams while for Oliver it was his eighth and first since a horrific back injury, which threatened to curtail his career in 2005.
